Why Your Google Business Profile Isn't Getting You Leads
You set up your Google Business Profile months ago. The phone still isn't ringing. Here's what's probably wrong.
You claimed it. You verified it. Now what?
Most small business owners set up their Google Business Profile, add their phone number and address, and then wonder why nothing happens.
The thing is, just having a profile isn't enough. Google Business Profile is a ranking system โ and like any ranking system, the businesses that put the work in get the visibility. The ones that don't get buried.
Here's what's likely going wrong and how to fix it.
Your Profile Is Half Empty
Google shows preference to complete profiles. Every field you leave blank is a missed opportunity. And we're not just talking about your address and phone number.
Fields most people skip:
- Business description (use all 750 characters)
- Services list with descriptions
- Products section
- Attributes (wheelchair accessible, free Wi-Fi, etc.)
- Opening hours (including special hours for holidays)
- Business category (primary AND secondary categories)
If your profile is 40% complete, you're competing against businesses at 90%. You'll lose every time.
You Have No Reviews (Or Bad Ones)
Reviews are the single biggest factor in local pack rankings after relevance and distance. A business with 50 genuine reviews will almost always outrank one with 3.
The numbers: Businesses with 40+ reviews get 32% more clicks than those with fewer than 10. And the difference between a 4.0 and 4.5 star rating is massive in terms of click-through rate.
How to get more reviews:
- Ask every customer. Every single one. Make it part of your process.
- Send a direct link via text or email (Google provides a shareable review link)
- Time it right โ ask when they're happiest, usually right after a successful job
- Respond to every review, positive and negative. Google counts this as engagement.
Your Photos Are Terrible (Or Missing)
Businesses with photos get 42% more direction requests and 35% more website clicks than those without. Yet most businesses have either zero photos or three blurry shots from 2019.
What to upload:
- Exterior of your premises (helps Google verify your location)
- Interior shots
- Your team at work
- Finished projects or products
- Before and after shots
Upload new photos regularly. Google favours profiles that show consistent activity.
You're Not Posting
Google Business Profile has a posts feature that most businesses completely ignore. Posts appear directly on your profile and in search results. They show Google your business is active and give customers a reason to engage.
Post ideas:
- New project completed (with photos)
- Seasonal offers or promotions
- Tips related to your industry
- Behind-the-scenes content
- Customer success stories
Aim for at least one post per week. It takes 5 minutes.
Your Categories Are Wrong
Your primary category is one of the most important ranking factors. If you're a "plumber" but you've set your category to "home improvement" you'll rank for neither.
Be as specific as possible. If you're a "gas engineer" don't just pick "plumber." Google has hundreds of categories โ find the one that most precisely describes what you do.
You can add up to 10 secondary categories too. Use them. A plumber might also add "water heater installation," "drain cleaning," and "bathroom remodelling."
You're Ignoring the Q&A Section
Anyone can ask a question on your Google Business Profile. And anyone can answer โ including your competitors.
Check your Q&A section regularly. Answer questions quickly and thoroughly. Better yet, seed it yourself with common questions your customers ask, then provide helpful answers. This adds keyword-rich content to your profile.
The Fix Is Free. It Just Takes Consistency.
Everything above costs nothing except time. The businesses that dominate the local map pack aren't paying for it โ they're just more consistent than everyone else.
Set aside 30 minutes a week: upload a photo, write a post, ask a customer for a review. Do that for 3 months and you'll see a measurable difference in how often you appear in local searches.
